The Spanish Civil War: Revised Edition

The Spanish Civil War: Revised Edition

$24.95

“A masterpiece of the historian’s art, Hugh Thomas’s The Spanish Civil War remains the best, most engrossing narrative of one of the most emblematic and misunderstood wars of the twentieth century. Revised and updated with significant new material, including new revelations about atrocities perpetrated against civilians by both sides in this epic conflict, this “definitive work on the subject” (Richard Bernstein, “The New York Times”) has been given a fresh face forty years after its initial publication in 1961. In brilliant, moving detail, Thomas analyzes a devastating conflict in which the hopes, dreams, and dogmas of a century exploded onto the battlefield. Like no other account, The Spanish Civil War dramatically reassembles the events that led a European nation, in a continent on the brink of world war, to divide against itself, bringing into play the machinations of Franco and Hitler, the bloodshed of Guernica, and the deeply inspiring heroics of those who rallied to the side of democracy. Communists, anarchists, monarchists, fascists, socialists, democrats — the various forces of the Spanish Civil War composed a fabric of the twentieth century itself, and Thomas masterfully weaves the diffuse and fascinating threads of the war together in a manner that has established the book as a genuine classic of modern history.”

Many girls are named after flowers (or even forms of the word flower, such as Flora). This inspired Linda Wolfsgruber to create this utterly charming book. Girls” names in different languages accompany her imaginative illustrations of flowers, so that the reader discovers, for example, that Gul means rose in Turkish, but that it is Rosa in Spanish and Rodanthe in Greek. Flowers named in the book include rose, heather, buttercup, sunflower, lily of the valley, daisy, bluebell, snowdrop, hyacinth, myrtle, camomile, cherry blossom, jasmine, violet, tulip, poppy… This is a beautiful and intriguing gift book for anyone interested in girls” names, flowers and the fine art of book illustration. But it can also be used in the classroom to talk about multiculturalism, language and botany.

A History of Dogs in the Early Americas

A History of Dogs in the Early Americas

$26.39

Drawing on chronicles, ethnographies, archaeological reports, myths, biology, and a rich array of visual materials, Marion Schwartz investigates views about dogs in a wide range of native societies in North and South America. She discusses the early domestication of the dog and looks at how hunting and gathering peoples relied on dogs to help with the hunt and to transport food and goods. She provides details about the eating of dogs for ritual purposes or as a dietary staple. She describes how dogs were associated with the afterlife, where they functioned as guides or guards, and how dogs were buried in tombs or were sacrificed to the gods in many cultures. She examines pre-Columbian art to see how the dog was portrayed and the various meanings attributed to it. The book concludes with a description of the fierce war dogs brought by the Spanish to wreak havoc among the Indians – dogs unlike any the New World had ever seen – and how traditional societies reinvetented their relationship with dogs after the arrival of the Europeans.

$59.95

Secret Geometries of the SwordIn the early years of the 17th century, Girard Thibault — poet, physician, architect, painter, occultist, and master swordsman, a true Renaissance man — astonished the courts of Europe with a new system of swordsmanship based on the principles of sacred geometry and Renaissance occult philosophy. In his youth, Thibault studied the art of the sword with the great Dutch fencing master Lambert van Someren, then traveled to southern Spain to learn destreza, the revolutionary Spanish system of rapier fencing, from Luis Pacheco de Narvaez and other masters of the art. After his return to the Netherlands around 1610, he won fame as one of the best swordsmen of the age, and set out to put everything he knew about the way of the sword into a single comprehensive textbook of rapier fencing that could be used by students who had no access to a teacher of his system.Originally published in 1630, Academy of the Sword is that textbook — the most elaborate manual of swordsmanship ever published.

 Alcohol in Ancient Mexico

Alcohol in Ancient Mexico

$156.77

The art of distillation arrived in Mexico with the Spaniards in the sixteenth century. Even before that time native skills and available resources had contributed to a well-developed tradition of intoxicating beverages, many of which are still produced and consumed.Henry Bruman visited various Mexican and Central American Indian tribes to reconstruct the variety and extent of these ancient traditions. He discerned five distinct areas that he defined by their culturally most significant beverages and superimposed these over the great mescal wine region. In these regions he noted wines from cactus, cactus fruit, cornstalks, and mesquite pods, beer from sprouted maize, and fermented sap from pulque agaves. Outside of the mescal region he observed widespread consumption in the Yucatan or a wine made from fermented honey and balche bark and lesser-known beverages in other regions. He also observed the frequent inclusion in the fermentation process of alkaloid-bearing ingredients such as peyote and tobacco, plants whose roots or bark contain saponins — which act as cardiac poisons — and even poisons from certain toads!Alcohol in Ancient Mexico describes in detail the various plants and processes used to make such beverages, their prevalence, and their significance for local culture. It also considers the relative absence of alcoholic drink in the southwestern United States, the introduction of stills following the Spanish conquest, and possible sources for the introduction of coconut wine.Although this book is based on research conducted in the 1930’s, this never-before-published material retains its relevance today. Bruman’s photographs offer a fascinating glimpse at a traditionalworld that was vanishing even then.

 Alpine

Alpine

$21.99

Alpine was born a railroad town, but long before the whistle of the steam locomotive broke the silence of Alpine Valley, the nearby spring was a favored campground for prehistoric nomads and later for Spanish explorers and freighters along the Chihuahua Trail. When the Southern Pacific unfurled its line down from Paisano Pass in 1882, landowner Thomas Murphy saw opportunity and platted the town. In 1887, Alpine was chosen as the county seat, and with the opening of Sul Ross Normal College in 1920, the town became the academic hub of the region. Following a decade of prosperity, the Great Depression and recurrent droughts triggered a slow decline. But since the early 1990s, Alpine has enjoyed a surge in regional art and culture, allowing it to reclaim its former glory as a proud little cosmopolitan cowtown perched at the top of the Texas Big Bend.

 Angora Matta

Angora Matta

$4.08

Angora Matta is a bilingual (Spanish/English) and interdisciplinary work that adopts performative writing to reflect on the transnational politics of culture. Part I is an introduction co-authored by a tango-opera librettist and a central character in her libretto, offering two contending versions of how this book came into being. Part II is the libretto for the tango-opera Angora Matta, a critical view of Argentina’s contemporary history conceived as a surreal and tragic thriller. Part III contains feminist scholarly essays written by three other characters who appear in the libretto: Elvira Diaz is a dance ethnographer disenchanted with her profession; Manuela Malva is a biting foreign-film critic invested in de-mystifying exotic renderings of the Argentine tango world; Angora Matta, the assassin for hire, closes the book with philosophico-poetic preoccupations about her profession. An innovative blend of scholarship and art, Angora Matta is both critique of and antidote to the representational practices of ethnography that have fetishized other cultures by isolating them from contemporary history and the global flow of international politics. Angora Matta, the tango-opera with music by Argentine composer Ramon Pelinski, premiered in Buenos Aires in November 2002 as a U.S./Argentina co-production.

Anita Brenner: A Mind of Her Own

Anita Brenner: A Mind of Her Own

$29.95

Journalist, historian, anthropologist, art critic, and creative writer, Anita Brenner was one of Mexico’s most sympathetic and discerning interpreters. Born to a Jewish immigrant family in Mexico a few years before the Revolution of 1910, she matured into an independent liberal who defended Mexico, workers, and all those who were treated unfairly, whatever their origin or nationality. In this book, her daughter, Susannah Glusker, traces Anita Brenner’s intellectual growth and achievements from the 1920s through the 1940s. Quoting extensively from Brenner’s unpublished journals and autobiographical novel, as well as from her published books and articles, Glusker paints an engrossing portrait of the intellectual circles in which Brenner moved in Mexico City and New York, which included such figures as Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco, David Alfaro Siqueiros, and Jean Charlot. Glusker describes the origin and impact of Brenner’s three major books, Idols behind Altars, Your Mexican Holiday, and The Wind That Swept Mexico, all of which grew out of a lifelong devotion to her native land – a devotion that also manifested itself in her championship of Mexico as a haven for Jewish immigrants in the early 1920s. Along the way, Glusker records Brenner’s support of many liberal and radical causes, including the Republican cause in the Spanish Civil War.

 Answered Prayers

Answered Prayers

$96.85

When Catholics in the Southwest ask God or a saint for help, many of them do not merely pray. They also promise or present a gift – a tiny metal object known as a milagro. A milagro, which means miracle in Spanish, depicts the object for which a miracle is sought, such as a crippled leg or a new house. Milagros are offered for everything people pray for, and so they can represent almost anything imaginable – arms, lungs, hearts, and eyes; men, women, and children; animals, cars, boats – even lost handbags and imprisoned men. In Answered Prayers, the Mexicans, Mexican Americans, Tohono O’odham, and Yaquis who practice this tradition share their stories of unwavering faith and divine intervention. Anthropologist and photographer Eileen Oktavec has spent more than two decades documenting this fascinating tradition in the Arizona-Mexico borderlands. Quoting extensive interviews, she explains the beliefs of the people who perform this ancient folk ritual and the many rules guiding this practice. She also describes the many places where milagros are offered – from the elaborate Mexican baroque Mission San Xavier near Tucson, Arizona, to tiny household shrines and hospitals on both sides of the border. Oktavec also explains how milagros are made, where they are bought, and how they are used in jewelry, sculpture, and art.

 Antonio Lopez

Antonio Lopez

$20

Contemporary Spanish Realist painter Antonio Lopez Garcia is one of those artists, like Bacon and Balthus, who, in a century dominated by the avant-garde and its legacy, has managed to craft an individualistic style on the margins of prevailing trends. Known for his exquisite explorations of the mundane–starkly lit people, buildings, plants and interiors–he deftly calls attention to these familiar forms, allowing the viewer to pore over their details. Sometimes hyperrealistic, Lopez Garcia has been criticized by many art critics for neoacademism and praised by others, like Robert Hughes, who consider him a master Realist. As Lopez Garcia told Michael Brenson in 1989, Reality has a highly resonant physical appearance that twentieth-century man perceives from different angles to those distinctive of other ages. The volume includes a text by art historian Jose M. Faerna.

 Arnis Self-defense

Arnis Self-defense

$19.95

One of only a few books on the subject written by a native-born Filipino author, Arnis Self-Defense offers a twofold, interrelated focus. It first looks at the unique Filipino culture — how it was greatly influenced by Spanish colonization, the oppression it suffered under foreign rule, and how the desire for freedom led to the development of the martial art of arnis. The book then presents the distinct technical aspects of this indigenous fighting art. Centering on the Kombatan method forged by Grandmaster Ernesto Presas Sr., it describes numerous maneuvers utilizing stick, blade, and empty-hand components and details their myriad practical applications. A wealth of photographs and drawings clearly illustrate the principles and techniques described. The author depicts arnis in its true light, as a simple, pragmatic method of self-defense, while debunking the more fanciful theories surrounding it as it surges in popularity.
