Tips for Buying Fine Art Posters   by Morgan Hamilton

To be honest, I’m not an expert when it comes to interior design or home decorating. When you visit my home, you will see that I don’t have the most expensive furniture, my fabrics and colors aren’t coordinated, and I don’t make the best use of space. You can be sure that you won’t be seeing any pictures of my place in a “Better Homes & Garden” photo shoot in the future.

However, the case is different when it comes to my walls. In my opinion, there’s nothing more depressing than a home with bare walls. As a result, I go out of my way to make sure that mine are covered with interesting things to look at. Some of my favorite wall hangings are the framed fine art posters that I’ve purchased over the years.

I would love to fill my home with original artwork, but I’m not wealthy enough to do that. Fortunately, I’ve found that I can add a touch of beauty to my home at a reasonable price through fine art posters. I can get everything from famous masterpieces by Da Vinci, Van Gogh, Picasso and lesser-known works by relatively obscure artists because there are literally thousands of fine art posters available.

Purchasing fine art posters from websites that specialize in them is the best way to obtain these posters. This is because you’ll get a limited selection and higher prices if you try to buy your posters from a museum gift shop or from a regular store. You can save money through these websites because they often have special sales promotions.

You should buy frames for your posters so that they will look good when they’re up on your walls. There are several framing options at your disposal. Websites that sell fine art posters often offer beautiful frames for their posters. Convenience is the advantage of buying pre-framed fine art posters. You’ll be able to put the framed piece on the wall in just a few minutes once the package arrives at your home.

Buying the frame separately is a second framing option that you have for your fine art posters. This option is usually less expensive than buying pre-framed prints. However, you’ll have to take precise measurements and then search high and low for a frame that is the perfect size, and complements the piece that you plan to showcase. I would not recommend buying frames for your posters separately because this is not as easy as it sounds, unless you have tons of time on your hands and like shopping.

What follows is the story of a young manÂ’s education in two of the oldest human passions, love and money. Rated: NRSynopsis: Never Trust A CorpseIt was a time of ghouls, ghosts and most ghastly of all, the fine art of grave robbing. Dominic Monaghan of LORD OF THE RINGS and LOST stars as 19th century corpse snatcher Arthur Blake, who pilfered the cemeteries and coffins of England until his capture by police. But just before Blake is to meet the hangman’s noose, he will confess to a peculiar priest (Ron Perlman of HELLBOY and SONS OF ANARCHY) his gruesome tale of vampires, zombies and cadaver dealing that takes him from the savagery of the criminal underworld to the terrors of the undead. Producer Larry Fessenden (WENDIGO, THE LAST WINTER) and Angus Scrimm (PHANTASM) co-star in this deliriously grisly and hilarious homage to foggy graveyards, bloody mayhem and the golden age gothic horror.

Who Sell Out [Deluxe Edition]

Who Sell Out [Deluxe Edition]

$25.48

The Who Sell Out was given a deluxe reissue in 1995, a reissue that greatly expanded upon the original 13-track album, adding a plethora of outtakes — some heavily bootlegged — and rejected jingles to the end of the album proper. That 1995 reissue seemed to mine the vaults pretty thoroughly, removing the need for another expanded reissue, especially not one as lengthy as this 2009 double-disc expansion. In a certain sense that’s true, as there’s not a whole lot of previously unreleased material among these 53 tracks: there’s a rather excellent, snappy studio take on “Summertime Blues,” a full version of “Premier Drums,” an instrumental called “Sodding About” that could function as the introduction to “In the Hall of the Mountain King” (and was indeed planned as part of a rejected instrumental EP with that track), and a tighter yet inferior remake of “Rael 1 & 2,” plus a few scattered jingles on the first disc, while the second has a stereo demo of “Relax” that’s quite different, and a stereo “Glittering Girl,” along with alternate mixes that are rare enough to seem previously unreleased. Unreleased tracks aren’t the reason for this package, un-reissued mixes are, with the first disc containing the original stereo mix of Sell Out, the second the original mono mix. Often, parsing these kinds of mixes is the province of fanatics…and to a certain extent that’s true here, at least in regards to the stereo mix, which does feel different than the 1995 reissue: it’s different but not dramatically so. That’s not the case with the mono mix, which is punchier and occasionally graced with additional flair, like a completely different guitar solo on “Our Love Was.” Also, this reissue flows differently than the 1995 deluxe edition, which was sequenced to mimic the original album’s pirate radio flow. That sensibility is retained on the first disc, where unbilled commercials pop up between the bonus tracks, but on the second disc the bonus material stands slightly apart from the rest of the album, which may be an appropriate move because this disc houses many of the alternate mixes and trails out with uncredited backwards backing tracks for “Armenia City in the Sky” and an unreleased commercial for the U.S. product Great Shakes. Despite all the repeated songs and differing mixes, it’s only these hidden clips that feel like collector bait; there’s such infectious joy and invention to this music, it’s easy to get swept up in its momentum. Besides, repetition has always been the name of the game in radio, so having songs repeat throughout this deluxe edition of The Who Sell Out only accentuates and strengthens its initial pop art concept, which makes this a rare Deluxe Edition that manages to improve an already great album, and offers up a wealth of rarities while still being immensely entertaining. (Collector’s note: even though this does have a wealth of rarities, it does not contain “Melancholia” and “Glow Girl” which were on the 1995 disc, giving further re

Petra Haden Sings: The Who Sell Out

Petra Haden Sings: The Who Sell Out

$12.78

So many times the title of an album is peripheral to what the contents actually hold. In the case of Petra Haden Sings: The Who Sell Out it is perfectly descriptive because, yes, Petra Haden does sing the Who’s Who Sell Out album right down to the make-believe ads that link the songs. Not just the vocals but all the instruments too. Working from a suggestion from Mike Watt (who may or may not have remembered the Who’s own foray into singing instrumental parts on “A Quick One, While He’s Away” when they had to sing “cello, cello, cello” because they couldn’t afford to hire the real thing), Haden spent time during the span of three years (2000-2003) re-creating the sound of the Who’s pop-art masterpiece using her voice and an old eight-track recorder. The results are pretty amazing. Apart from an occasional rhythmic stumble and the tendency for the drum sounds to sound like synsonic drums, she really nails the layered, flowing and psychedelic in the true sense of the word feel of the original album. She pulls off the feat of being reverent to the original material while also sounding completely out on a limb artistically. Never trying to imitate instruments exactly, she instead goes for the feel and texture of them. It would have been impossible to sound like Keith Moon anyway and she wisely limits the drums to an occasional piece here and there. The astounding moments are many but some of the best are the guitar plinks and twangs from “Our Love Was,” the drum hits and wailing guitar solos on “Relax,” the chant-like bass on “Silas Stingy” and the choral effects of “Rael.” Maybe the most impressive feat was managing to account for all the parts and pieces of “I Can See for Miles,” a task which would have driven a lesser artist insane but one that she makes sound effortless. The song that actually competes with the original is ” Sunrise” as she imbues the song with a feeling of joy and light equal to the original and her lead vocal is perfect. The aspect of the album that will probably be overlooked is the actual vocals — the vocals that sing the lyrics, that is. She has a crystal-clear, beautiful voice that really soars and her harmonies are consistently breathtaking. It would have been lovely enough just to hear her sing the Who’s melodies and lyrics without all the backing “instruments.” The likelihood that you will reach for Petra Haden’s version of Sell Out before you will reach for the Who’s will vary with each listener’s tolerance for novelty. Even the strictest Who purist should hear Haden’s version at least once though and anyone who likes to hear artists taking wild chances and succeeding wildly should hold up Petra Haden Sings: The Who Sell Out as a shining example. ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi

China Hand: From the Great Wall to Olive Ball & Beyond

China Hand: From the Great Wall to Olive Ball & Beyond

$13.95

How 22 young people raised $42,000 to pay for a trip to the People’’s Republic of China in 1979 is just one secret that Ruth Pennington Paget shares in China Hand: From the Great Wall to Olive Ball & Beyond. Paget’’s three-week tour prepared her to sell sponsorships and coordinate public relations for the first Super Bowl shown in China in 1986. Her chapters about studying Chinese art and society at the University of Chicago reveal how the Chinese view the world and the infrastructure of China’’s economic success. Paget’’s knowledge of Chinese bronze vessels created her first opportunities to write about art, and her late-found love for Chinese food helped her become a restaurant reviewer for two years. Throughout China Hand Paget shows how to benefit culturally and economically from learning Chinese thought. Praise for China Hand: From the Great Wall to Olive Ball & Beyond I anxiously looked forward to the next page when I read [China Hand}. It reminds me of so many things in China, and it touched my heart. – Jie Judy Zhu, Professor, Defense Language Institute

I place the fishes on the bank, where they flop and twirl. ‘Don’t be scared, ‘ I tell those fishes. ‘I am saving you from drowning.’ Soon enough, the fishes grow calm and lie still. Yet, sad to say, I am always too late. The fishes expire. And because it is evil to waste anything, I take those dead fishes to market and I sell them for a good price. And then, on Christmas morning, eleven of the travelers boat across a misty lake for a sunrise cruise – and disappear. Oprah Book Club #63 Uwem Akpan’s first published short story, An Ex-mas Feast, appeared in The New Yorker’s Debut Fiction issue in 2005. The story’s portrait of a family living together in a makeshift shanty in urban Kenya, and their attempts to find gifts of any kind for the impending Christmas holiday, gives a matter-of-fact reality to the most extreme circumstances and signaled the arrival of a breathtakingly talented writer. My Parents’ Bedroom is a Rwandan girl’s account of her family’s struggles to maintain a facade of normalcy amid unspeakable acts. In Fat tening for Gabon, a brother and sister cope with their uncle’s attempt to sell them into slavery. Luxurious Hearses creates a microcosm of Africa within a busload of refugees and introduces us to a Muslim boy who summons his faith to bear a treacherous ride through Nigeria. What Language Is That? reveals the emotional toll of the Christian-Muslim conflict in Ethiopia through the eyes of childhood friends. Every story is a testament to the wisdom and resilience of children, even in the face of the most agonizing situations our planet can offer.
